Construction Stopped at Grand Lisboa Palace

Following the death of a second construction worker at SJM Holdings’ Grand Lisboa Palace (l.), the Macau government has suspended construction of the resort, now under development in the Cotai district.

Second fatality in under a year

SJM Holdings Ltd.’s Grand Lisboa Palace on Macau’s Cotai Strip, which was to have opened in March 2018, may have to push back its grand opening.

Late last month, a 47-year-old construction worker fell more than three stories to his death. It was the second death at the construction site in less than a year; in September 2016, a worker was killed by a piece of falling glass, reported the Asia Gaming Brief.

The $3.8 billion casino resort, which broke ground in 2014, is the last of the integrated resorts planned for the Cotai district. Macau occupational safety and health administrators plan to investigate the most recent incident.

“The Labour Affairs Bureau has issued a suspension order to the contractor in order to protect the safety of other workers; and ordered the contractor to fully implement effective measures that improve occupational safety,” the agency stated. Construction cannot resume until the probe is complete and the agency gives its OK.
