The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board last week approved the petition of Stadium Casino LLC, the Cordish Companies subsidiary that owns the Live! casinos in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, for a second sports betting certificate.
Cordish paid $10 million for the license, which evidently will not apply to either Live! casino. The gaming board had initially rejected company officials’ argument that it should not be required to pay a second fee to create a sportsbook at Live! Pittsburgh, a Category 4 satellite casino tied to the stand-alone license for Live! Casino Philadelphia.
However, Cordish was successful in lobbying for legislation last year that removed the requirement that the satellite facility pay a second $10 million fee, so the payment was not required for a sportsbook at Live! Pittsburgh. Both casinos are offering FanDuel retail sportsbooks.
The newly granted petition allows Stadium Casino to create a sportsbook outside of the two it currently operates, but it was not immediately known where the company plans to place the operation.
