Could Terrorists Target Macau?

A risk mitigation firm says the biggest threat to Macau isn’t the mainland’s crackdown on corruption, but terror organizations like ISIS, which may be motivated to attack the territory’s “America, Jewish and Chinese interests.”

Possible “spectacular” attack

Corporate intelligence and risk mitigation firm Steve Vickers & Associates warns that Macau could fall victim to a “spectacular” attack by terror groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda.

A report from the Hong Kong-based firm said, “Terrorism remains a concern in the Asia-Pacific region, with traditional venues at risk given the nexus of Chinese, American and Jewish interests in the gaming sector.” Sands China Ltd. is owned by U.S. billionaire Sheldon Adelson, who is Jewish, has strong ties to Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu, and is an outspoken supporter of the GOP. Steve Wynn, chairman of Wynn Resorts, is also Jewish and politically active in the U.S.

Intelligence reports shared with the Chinese government have raised concerns that radical Islamic terrorist groups are recruiting in Xinjiang Province in Western China, CalvinAyre.com reported.

But Macau Judiciary Police Director Chau Wai Kuong says the risk of a terrorist attack in the city is “relatively low” due to enhanced intelligence gathering and security measures, according to the Macau News.
