Covid A Fatal Blow to French Casino

Casino de Saint-Nectaire in Puy de Dôme, central France, is the first gaming hall to close for good as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. According to CDC Gaming Reports, the casino has gone into liquidation by order of the Clermont-Ferrand commercial court. Fifteen employees of the independently owned casino have lost their jobs.

The casino’s financial struggle preceded the Covid-19 outbreak and had been in receivership since November 2019. But two subsequent closures caused by the virus was the final straw. One buyer, the local company NéoFélis Jeux, expressed interest in acquiring the property but was deemed “‘too weak’ by the commercial court.

According Puy de Dôme Mayor Alphonse Bellonte, five gaming operators are expected to bid on the casino, which is located in the town of Saint-Nectaire, population 750.

In the 2017-18 financial year, gross gaming revenues came to about €1 million (US$1.266 million) with a turnover of €840,895.
