Dutch Online Market Smaller Than Projected

The Dutch online gaming market is smaller than the regulator, de Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) initially estimated. KSA Chairman René Jansen (l.) revealed the information in his 2021 annual report.

Dutch Online Market Smaller Than Projected

The online gaming market in the Netherlands may be smaller than originally projected. René Jansen, chairman of de Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), made the assertion during his annual report on 2021.

The report said that 634,000 online gaming accounts were created between the launch of the market in October 2021 and the beginning of March.

Jansen noted that many players open multiple accounts, so the actual number of players might be fewer than expected.

He said, “Please note this does not mean that there are so many players (on legal sites) in the Netherlands.” Jansen added, “An unknown number of players have an account with several providers. So there are (probably considerably) fewer than 634,000.”

He continued, “This is an important insight, because earlier estimates have been made of approximately 1 million Dutch people who—occasionally or more often—participate in games of chance on the internet. There is even a recent survey that came in at 1.8 million. Those estimates therefore seem exaggerated, particularly because a number of large providers without a license no longer offer their services in the Netherlands from 1 October.”
