Dutch Regulator Braces for iGaming Rush

René Jansen, chairman of Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), says the Netherlands gaming regulator is equipped to deal with an influx of applications seeking to join its new online gambling marketplace.

On September 22, addressing delegates of the Gaming in Holland conference, Jansen said, “The countdown has begun to make the (Remote Gambling KOA Act) a reality.” Starting March 1, 2021, “It will be possible to submit applications for online gambling licenses. And that, in turn, means that the online gambling market will open on 1 September 2021.”

Jansen said the KOA Act includes comprehensive consumer safeguards and measures to address gambling addiction.

In the runup to March, the KSA has established a temporary licensing department to deal with an anticipated influx of licensing applications.

KSA staff have begun training in preparation to handle licensing application volumes and temporary staff are also being prepared.

“We will look at the applicant’s activities for a period of two years and eight months prior to the date of their application,” Jansen pledged. “The review period of two years and eight months reflects the delay incurred in relation to the date on which the law was previously intended to enter into force.”
