The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) supports a proposal by the European Commission verify gamblers’ identity through electronic identity wallets, or e-IDs. Proponents say the technology could minimize compliance costs across online gambling jurisdictions.
“A standardized identity verification method would particularly help reduce administrative and compliance costs for those online gambling operators who operate across multiple European jurisdictions,” an EGBA statement read. The commission hopes to get 80 percent of EU residents on e-ID by 2030, according to SBC News.
“An EU e-ID would, for example, help strengthen existing processes to prevent minors from accessing online gambling and to fight fraud and money laundering,” said Ekaterina Hartmann, EGBA director.
