Fake News: Roof Collapse at African Casino a Hoax

Social media provides an instantaneous way to spread the “news,” fake or otherwise. Last week police and rescue personnel in Durban, South Africa assured residents that, contrary to a rumor that caught fire on the internet, the roof of the Sun Coast Casino (l.) did not collapse.

Fake News: Roof Collapse at African Casino a Hoax

South African police and rescue services last week condemned a rumor that ignited on social media saying a portion of the roof at Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World had collapsed, killing 11 people.

The message reads: “Terrible news, part of the ceiling at Suncoast Casino collapsed killing 11 people and injuring 15. Terrible. People screaming everywhere. It’s chaos. Police on the way. People also started looting shops. It’s like a war zone. Keep away. Tell your friends. It’s terrible. Emergency Services on scene trying to maintain order. Utter chaos.”

Kyle van Reenen of Crisis Medical said it was a hoax and implored residents to stop sharing the message.

“We can confirm that this is a hoax,” he said. “A small part of the globe structure suffered damage in winds however no injury was reported. Please do not forward on hoax messages.”
