Foxwoods Begins Showing Theatrical Shows

Foxwoods will welcome its first theatrical offering, Menopause the Musical to its 1,200 seat Fox Theater. Could a Tony nomination be far behind?

For the first time Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut has scheduled a theatrical event at its 1,200-seat Fox Theater: Menopause the Musical. In the past Foxwoods has stuck to concerts and revues.

Foxwoods COO Felix Rappaport won’t say whether the show is a harbinger of similar offerings down the road, but said merely that Menopause is a very popular show and that Foxwoods wanted to take advantage of that.

He hinted at other Broadway type shows at the Fox and the 4,000-seat arena, and said he has been in talks with booking agents, but said he is not looking for “cutting edge” programs.

This can’t be viewed with a warm heart by large theaters in New London or Hartford that specialize in Broadway-style entertainment, since they might find themselves competing for audience share with the casino.

Scott Galbraith, vice president of programs at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford told the Hartford Courant that performing shows like Menopause could develop audiences, but added that competing for larger events, “could be problematic, depending on the show and the schedule.”
