Gaming Incentives Limited Down Under

Measures to limit online gambling incentives have taken effect in Australia. The country’s new National Consumer Protection Framework came into effect on May 26.

Australia’s new National Consumer Protection Framework took effect May 26, bringing with it new limits on gambling incentives offered to consumers online. The NCPF was first announced in December by Minister for Families and Social Services Paul Fletcher.

According to Asia Gaming Brief, the NCPF contains 10 measures, including:

  • The prohibition of lines of credit for wagering purposes;
  • The discouragement of the use of payday lending for online wagering;
  • A reduction in the customer verification period;
  • Prohibitions on specified inducements;
  • Easier account closure mechanisms;
  • The establishment of a voluntary opt-out plan;
  • The provision of activity statements to customers;
  • Consistent responsible gaming messaging;
  • Training of staff in responsible gaming
  • The development and implementation of a national self-exclusion register

Jamie Nettleton of Addisons Lawyers told AGB the measures have not been implemented uniformly in all Australian states and territories.
