The Morula Sun Casino and Hotel in Pretoria, South Africa will be relocated to Menlyn Maine, but with a slew of conditions laid out by the Gauteng Gambling Board. The board approved Sun International’s application after months of public opinion. A four-day hearing was held in April on the issue.
The board requires Sun International to fund the transfer of Morula employees to Menlyn Maine and offer them employment with their present benefits.
Additional conditions are as follows:
• The new casino may not have an entrance facing Glen High School;
• Crossings between the school and casino must be designed to accommodate children;
• All entrances must have security at all hours;
• Children under the age of 18 and carrying school bags must be kept away from areas of gambling or where alcohol is served;
• Cash delivery and collections must be confined to the basement;
• Transit vehicles may not travel on the new road yet to be constructed;
• Sun International must adhere to the agreement with Glen High School and Department of Education;
• The casino operator must enter into a community trust that will assist disadvantaged communities in Menlyn Maine;
• The casino must subsidize the disadvantaged for R950 million; and
• The facility’s commitment to independent hospitality and gaming training must be detailed and specific.
Other conditions have the casino opening with 2,000 slots, 60 tables and parking for nearly 3,000 vehicles. Shops, restaurants and bars will be eventually added to the 3 billion rand complex, which could take three years to build.
