Genting Malaysia: Link to iGaming is ‘Fake News’

Genting Malaysia Bhd, which operates Resorts World Genting near Kuala Lumpur, advised patrons last month that “fake news” has linked the company to online gaming services.

Per the website of the casino complex in Genting Highlands, the information was disseminated through “unauthorized social media platforms and weblinks, some purportedly linked to the Star Media Group in respect of online gaming.

“We wish to stress that GENM is not involved or associated in any way or manner to these online gaming sites or notices. Please do not trust these links and refrain from circulating them.”

According to GGRAsia, while the global operator also has casinos in the United States, the U.K., the Bahamas and Egypt, it typically derives most of its revenue from domestic gamblers.

According to the website Statista.com and data from Ipsos, in a survey on “fake news,” 70 percent of respondents in Malaysia claimed that online news websites and platforms reaching Malaysians had a “fair to great extent” of the questionable content.
