The Gibraltar Betting and Gaming Association has created a charity aimed at reducing gambling harm. The Gibraltar Gambling Care Foundation expects to work with consumers, industry leaders and regulators in an effort to lessen the risk of gambling disorders.
Belvedere Trustees Limited will serve as counselors for the foundation, as well as providing start up research funds for the Centre of Excellence in Responsible Gaming at the University of Gibraltar. The Gibraltar regulator has already raised more than £2.5 million (US$3.5 million) from gaming firms in order to set up the center, according to iGaming Business.
GGCF will primarily focus its research on the impact of problem gambling on individuals, families and society, and the means of mitigating negative impacts. The charity will examine the incidence of gambling addiction and other problem behaviors, prevention factors and solutions.
Other research expected to be looked at include standardizing identification, measuring criteria, and the creation of a database of iGaming industry information.
“This is a pivotal step change for all Gibraltar licensed operators and the jurisdiction as a whole,” GBGA chairman Nigel Birrell said. “The GBGA, via the GGCF will be supporting the creation of an industry leading research program aimed at exploring solutions to minimize gambling related harm and the creation of open-source databases for academic studies.”
