When James Maida worked as an attorney in the late 1980s for the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) in New Jersey, he noticed a need for an outside organization to test slot machines before they were submitted for testing to the DGE. This would give the manufacturer confidence that it would pass the strict DGE guidelines. So Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) was formed to fill this need. Maida set up his first testing devices in a spare bedroom. Today, GLI has offices around the world, employing thousands of workers and benefitting the industry in many more ways than simply testing slot machines. He sat down with GGB Editor Frank Legato at his offices in New Jersey in June to talk about his company and its place in the industry.
