Group Calls Out Adelson’s Contribution

A liberal political group filed a complaint with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board stating most of Sheldon Adelson's $1 million contribution to a Republican PAC ended up in Governor Tom Corbett's re-election account, in violation of state laws prohibiting donations from casino owners. The PAC later transferred the money to another account.

The liberal political group Keystone Progress recently filed a complaint with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board claiming on December 31,  Las Vegas Sands Corporation Chief Executive Officer Sheldon Adelson gave the Republican Governors Association million, of which 7,844 was moved to the political action committee RGA Pennsylvania 2014 PAC. Keystone Progress said that PAC was set up on behalf of Pennsylvania Governor Tom who’s running for re-election, and Adelson’s donation to the account was a violation of state gaming law that bans political contributions from casino owners.

Nathan Sooy of Keystone Progress said, “Mr. Adelson’s contribution was massive, and strikes at the heart of why the political-influence restrictions exist. I urge the board to act promptly.”

Following Las Vegas Sands spokesman Ron Reese’s comment that the RGA’s contribution to Corbett’s account was indeed a mistake, the RGA quickly transferred the money out of the Pennsylvania PAC. The RGA then said that none of Adelson’s cash had been passed along to Corbett’s campaign.

Corbett has received $1.8 million from the RGA Pennsylvania 2014 PAC, including $210,000 in December and $1.6 million in April.
