Hearing on California Casino Liquor License for Jamul

A hearing will be held September 6 on whether to issue a permit to sell alcohol to the Jamul-San Diego Casino (l.). The San Diego County casino is located on windy country roads and many residents fear to allow drinks to be served there.

The California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board will hold a hearing September 6 on whether to grant a permanent license to sell alcoholic beverages to the Hollywood Jamul-San Diego Casino in San Diego’s Backcountry.

Residents of the community of Jamul, many of whom have fought the casino from the beginning, have argued that the winding country roads that serve the casino are too dangerous to allow for more DUIs. A casino with a similar location, the Barona casino, only serves alcohol to patrons who dine in the resort.

Statistics show that the five-year average accident rate is up, although the total number of accidents in the six months since the casino opened are down, the East County News Service reported.

Opponents say the license should at least be delayed until CalTrans, the state’s transportation department makes road improvements that it has promised.
