Hearing Set For Illinois Environmental Impact Statement

The Bureau of Indiana Affairs will hold a public hearing January 26 in Shabbona, Illinois—the first step to develop an environmental impact statement for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation's proposed casino. Tribal officials said the casino would offer 24-hour bingo, restaurants and lounges, with an economic impact of $12 million annually.

Representatives from U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs will hold a hearing Tuesday, January 26 in the village of Shabbona, Illinois for public input regarding the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation’s proposed gambling center. Tribal officials said the center could offer 24-hour bingo, restaurants and lounges, attracting 930,000 visitors a year and generating more than million in annual economic impact.

In addition, the center could create 400 new jobs, but a spokesperson for the anti-gambling group DeKalb County Taxpayers Against the Casino said the number of jobs would not outweigh the social costs to the village.
