House of Lords Considers UK Online Gambling Bill

A bill to require all online casino companies operating in the UK to be licensed regardless of their home base has reached the committee stage in the House of Lords. The bill also requires online gambling firms to pay a 15 percent tax on gaming revenue.

A bill that would change how online gaming works in the United Kingdom has been sent to the House of Lords for review.

The House of Lords has begun committee review of the bill. Officials said the bill is still on track for implementation before the end of the year.

If passed, the legislation would require all online gaming companies operating in the UK market to hold a UK Gambling Commission license regardless of where they are based. Currently, only UK-based companies need to hold a license.

The bill would also impose a 15 percent tax on gaming revenue. Also, firms based outside of the UK would be required to report suspicious betting behavior involving UK customers.

The bill was introduced in the House of Commons last year and has now moved to the House of Lords.
