Idaho Tribe Accused of Breaking Law to Fight Initiative

Supporters of amending the Idaho constitution to allow historical racing machines at the state’s racetracks accuse the Coeur d’Alene Tribe of trying to pay signature gatherers to stop—a violation of the law.

Save Idaho Horse Racing, which is attempting to qualify a petition to let voters legalize historical racing machines at racetracks, is accusing the Coeur d’Alene Tribe of breaking state law to fight them.

The initiative supporters told law enforcement last week that the tribe has offered to pay two employees gathering petitions to stop. That would be a violation of state law, and a felony. The group previously accused the tribe of hiring operatives to intimidate people not to sign the petitions.

The North Idaho Voter Project, a group tied to the tribe, has not yet commented on the accusation.
