India: State Casinos Close for Two Weeks

The Indian state of Goa, which initially expected its casinos to remain open during the Covid-19 outbreak, has joined the scores of jurisdictions to order a temporary shutdown.

Goa is the home of seven casino boats, which operate on the Mandovi River, as well as nine land-based gaming halls. Schools, gyms, spas, pubs, clubs, public swimming pools and theaters in Goa also will remain closed until at least March 31.

“I urge people to avoid travelling without necessity and not attend or organize large functions and gatherings, including weddings as a preventive measure against coronavirus,” said Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

To date, there have been no confirmed Covid-19 cases in Goa, but India has confirmed 113 cases of infection and two deaths.

The state of Sikkim, located between Nepal and Bhutan, has closed all casinos as well, reported Asia Gaming Brief. In addition, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced last week that tourists have been banned, and that all schools remain shut until April 15.

Also in India, the Royal Western India Turf Club in Mumbai has cancelled all scheduled races until further notice. Established in 1800, the Turf Club runs the Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Mumbai and the Pune Race Course.
