Indian State Governor Amends GST Tax on Gambling

Indian state Governor Arif Mohammed Khan of Kerela has signed an ordinance amending the state’s Goods & Service Tax (GST) as it relates to gambling, the news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) reported January 6. The GST for Kerela is 28 percent.

He is allowed initiative ordinances when the legislature is not in session. There is a disagreement between the governor and the legislature on the issue of taxing gambling.

The ordinance signed by Khan taxes gambling at brick-and-mortar casinos, horse racing and online gaming and had removed ambiguous sections in the law on betting for cash.

The 28 percent GST as it applies to online gaming, only taxes actual gambling, not services provided by the platform.
