Indian State Looks at Skill Games

The legislative assembly of the Indian state of Nagaland met last week to discuss skill games like poker, rummy and fantasy sports. Legislation on the matter was postponed last summer due to opposition from the Baptist Church Council.

First state to consider legal online games

Significant changes could be in the works regarding online poker in India, especially in the state of Nagaland. According to multiple news reports, a select committee was called to examine the Nagaland Prohibition of Gambling and Promotion and Regulation of Online Games of Skill Bill, first put forth and then tabled in 2015.

The committee, led by MLA Khriehu Liezietsu, was scheduled to meet February 10 to assess “all the socio-political and economical aspects” of the games, and also weigh the potential impact of real-money online games, according to the Online Poker Blog.

The Online Skill Games Bill, which would license and regulate online poker, rummy, bridge, fantasy sports and similar games, was shelved in July 2015 because of criticism from the Nagaland Baptist Church Council. Nagaland is the first Indian state to consider legalizing online skill games, reported the Asia Gaming Brief.
