Indiana Opponents Question Michigan Tribe’s Wetlands Permit

The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians is seeking a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to fill in wetlands and alter a stream at its proposed South Bend, Indiana casino site. In response to opponents, the Corps of Engineers extended the public comment period.

Although the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians has not received federal approval to build a casino in South Bend, Indiana, opponents there are speaking out. Jake Teshka of the anti-casino group Citizens for a Better Michiana, said, “Our main concern is that the public is just not being heard, and maybe we should hold a public hearing.”

In response, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers has extended the public comment period on the tribe’s proposed permit to fill in wetlands and alter a stream at the 166-acre site.

Tribal officials said the work will affect only 2.68 acres out of the entire site. The Corps of Engineers permit is separate from the Bureau of Indian Affair’s environmental impact statement required for the proposed casino.
