Israel Plans Casino at Former Airport

An airport in the Israeli city of Eilat (l.) could be the site of a new, Vegas-style casino resort. The plan is under consideration by the government, which has asked all departments and ministries to look at the proposal.

Southernmost town has “amazing potential”

The city of Eilat, Israel, could be the site of the nation’s first casino, according to a report in Ynetnews. The publication reported that an interdepartmental government committee convened in recent weeks to examine the possibility of establishing a Las Vegas-style casino resort in the nation’s southernmost city.

The meeting was called by Tourism Minister Yariv Levin at the request of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “We are examining this very seriously,” Levin said. “We think this can bring Eilat to a different place. It has amazing potential. The idea is to not only establish a casino, but a large entertainment complex that will launch Eilat upwards.”

The plans also include a new convention center, shopping facilities and other nongaming attractions. The likely spot for the development is thought to be Eilat Airport, which will be cleared for redevelopment after a new airport opens in Timna.

The committee meeting was attended by representatives of the ministries of Transportation, Justice, Treasury, Public Security and Welfare, as well as the Tax Authority and Land Authority, Ynetnews reported.
