Italy’s Online Casino Betting Declines

Italy’s online gaming sector declined in June, posting the lowest returns of the year so far. The cause, most agree, is the reopening of Italy’s land-based casinos in June, which also spurred a rise in sports betting revenue.

Italy’s Online Casino Betting Declines

As Italy’s land-based casinos return to full business, the Italian online sector has suffered, posting the lowest returns of 2021 so far.

Italy’s casinos reopened in June, the first month since last October. This spurred sports betting revenue to its highest total since that month with €215.8 million (£184.7 million/$254.3 million). Correspondingly, the country’s online sector revenue fell.

Total online gaming revenue was €263.2 million, the lowest since September 2020, when it was €102.5 million.

Nevertheless online gaming has risen steadily in the last two years and even at $102.5 million, it was higher than every month up to November 2020.

Retail sports betting customers in Italy also returned in large numbers, with Bet365 leading with 13.4 percent of the market, followed by Snai and Sisal.
