Macau: No Casinos in Coloane

Macau Secretary for Economy and Finance Lionel Leong (l.) says officials have received no requests to build new casinos on Coloane island, a mostly residential area of the SAR. Lawmaker Au Kam San had inquired about the possibility, which worried neighbors.

Macau’s “last piece of green”

There are no plans for a new casino on Coloane, an island in Macau, according to city official Lionel Leong.

The secretary for Economy and Finance responded to an inquiry by lawmaker Au Kam San, who heard that a Hong Kong businessman identified only as “Chiu” planned to build a hotel in the community of 60,000. Apparently, Chiu once planned a casino there too.

The lawmaker spoke for the residents of the island, saying Coloane is “the last piece of green ecological zone in Macau.”

“I completely understand the concerns from society,” said Leong. “It’s still a presumption, because so far we haven’t received any requests from gaming operators about this.”

According to Casino News Daily, Leong also noted that such applications could only be filed only by one of the six current casino concessionaires in Macau, and not by hotel operators.
