Macau Sports Betting Company Relicensed

Macau’s only sports betting concessionaire, Macau Slot Co. Ltd., will see its sports betting concession extended through mid-2021. Macau Slot enjoys a monopoly in the jurisdiction on all sports wagers except horseracing.

The sole sports betting firm operating in Macau has been relicensed through June 5, 2021, according to GGRAsia. Macau Slot has a lock on the sports betting industry, including football and basketball, but excluding horseracing; that concession is held by Macau Horse Racing Co. Ltd., which runs the Macau Jockey Club.

The firm, controlled by Stanley Ho, founder of Macau casino operator SJM Holdings Ltd., posted gross revenues of MOP673 million (US$84 million) in 2015, down 8.6 percent year-on-year, according to the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau. Back in 2014, the last year for which hard numbers are available, the company saw an annual 18.4 percent spike in profits to MOP121.84 million, due in part to increased betting on FIFA World Cup soccer.

American Gaming Association President Geoff Freeman told GGRAsia that sports betting—a staple in every Las Vegas casino—could be big if it expanded on Macau. “I know it’s something (Macau casino operators) would like to do,” Freeman said. “The industry has to constantly evolve and provide our customers with new products.”
