Marching Backwards in Vegas

A very poor month of March on the Las Vegas Strip has brought down number for the state as a whole. However, local markets and Reno showed spikes in revenue.

A report from the Nevada Gaming Control Board showed state casinos hauling in 1 million in March, down 3.2 percent from 2 million a year ago. The one upside to the sliding month was with NCAA tournament betting, which grew astronomically. Over 5 million was wagered, and casinos profited .9 million of it, which was a rise of 43.9 percent from 2014.

Yet again, the main issue was a decline baccarat hold. March saw casinos on the Las Vegas Strip win $68.1 million on the game, which was a 33 percent drop from the same month last year. The trends have not been good at all, as seven of the previous eight months have shown a decline in baccarat numbers.

One positive note with baccarat was that March saw $818.5 million bet on the game, which broke a six month streak of declining overall volume. On the Strip, overall casino winnings dropped 9.6 percent from a year ago to $507 million. The rest of Clark County casinos showed an increase in revenue, including Fremont Street downtown, Laughlin and Mesquite. Reno also saw revenue rise 6.8 percent to $46.5 million.
