The National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA) September 18 awarded the John Kieffer Sovereignty Award to Rodney Butler, chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, which operates Foxwoods in Connecticut.
The award recognizes people who exemplify NIGA’s mission: “to protect and preserve the general welfare of tribes striving for self-sufficiency through gaming enterprises in Indian Country.” Butler was given the Citizen of the Year award in May by the Eastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce.
