The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe of Connecticut, owners of Foxwoods Resort Casino, recently re-elected Rodney Butler (l.) to a fifth consecutive term on the tribal council and a third term as council chairman. Incumbent treasurer Jean Swift also was elected to the tribal council.

Rodney Butler recently was elected to serve a fifth consecutive term on the tribal council and a third term as council chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, owners of Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Incumbent treasurer Jean Swift and Daniel Menihan also were elected to the council. Council Vice Chairwoman Crystal Whipple was replaced by Councilor Fatima Dames.

The council governs the tribe and oversees casino management. The re-elected and elected officials’ terms will begin in January.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and the Mohegan Tribe, owner of the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, have teamed to pursue a third casino in northern Connecticut, in order to compete with MGM’s future casino in Springfield, Massachusetts. However, there is some disagreement at the federal level regarding the state’s recently passed bill allowing the third casino.
