Meta Fined $6.5 Million for Violating Italy’s Gambling Ad Ban

Facebook owner Meta has been fined $6.5 million for violating Italy’s ban on gambling advertisements, after the site allegedly posted promotions for gambling on Facebook and Instagram.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and other social media sites, has been fined €5.85 million (US$6.5 million) by Italy’s Authority for Communications Guarantees, for violating the prohibition of gambling advertising under Article 9 of the legislative decree of 12 July 2018.

According to the regulator, the fine followed numerous reports confirming the presence of promotional or indirectly advertising content related to games or bets with cash prizes on 18 profiles/accounts (five on Instagram and 13 on Facebook), as well as 32 “sponsored” posts on the social media sites.
