Mohegan Sun Hotel Rising

The second Mohegan Sun Casino’s hotel, the 400-room Earth Tower, is starting to stab into the skyline, heralding an October 2016 opening. Steel girders are being lifted to create the skeleton for the hotel, now easily visible for miles around.

Although it will be almost a year before the Mohegan Sun Casino’s second hotel, the 400-room Earth Tower, opens, it is already pointed an aggressive silhouette into the sky as it rises from the valley.

Work on the $120 million hotel began almost a year ago. The foundation was poured in June. Now the steel skeleton is taking shape as girders thrust into the sky.

The second hotel has been a long time coming. Originally planned seven years ago, it was stopped dead by the onset of the Great Recession in 2008.

The existing hotel, the Sky Hotel, was recently named best hotel in the state by Travel and Leisure Magazine. Once the new hotel opens it will be able to offer rates that will be about 25 percent lower than what is currently offered. Currently the Sky Hotel turns away 250,000 visitors each year for lack of accommodations.

Tribal Chairman Kevin Brown said last week of the newest investment, “We take very seriously our role in Connecticut’s tourism industry and economic welfare.”
