A new wave of Covid-19 cases has caused the government of Malaysia to institute new restrictions on business, including casinos including Resorts World Genting. The stricter preventive measures will be in effect at least until January 26, according to news reports.
Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin outlined the latest Movement Control Order (MCO) on January 11 in response to rising viral cases, which passed 3,000 in a day for the first time the previous week, Inside Asian Gaming reported. The order covers six states—Penang, Selangor, Federal Territories, Johor, Melaka and Sabah—and includes a complete ban on interstate travel as well as travel between districts in the six states.
Resorts World Genting, operated by Genting Malaysia, issued a statement saying, “Hence, we will be operating at a lower capacity and some of our offerings may not be available from 13 January 2021. Some of our hotels, facilities, attractions and other offerings will be subjected to revised operating hours, limited availability or temporary closure.”
The company recently disclosed that several employees of a staff canteen at Genting Highlands had tested positive for the virus.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin said Monday, “The situation today is indeed very alarming. Our healthcare system is under tremendous pressure now than at any other time since the start of the pandemic. As I have said before, unprecedented situations call for unprecedented measures.”
