Navajos Approve $25M CARES Money for Casino Workers

The Navajo Nation last week approved $25 million in CARES Act relief money for 1,100 workers of the tribe’s four casinos that have been impacted by the Covid pandemic shutdown.

The tribe has casinos in New Mexico and Arizona. All were closed in March but continued to pay workers until late July when Navajo Gaming began to run out of money.

The casino’s employees were included in the $475 million spending bill the Navajo Council approved last week. This will prevent layoffs and loss of health benefits. That money from CARES Act funds approved by Congress.

The four casino will remain closed until the end of August. The nation is gradually reopening businesses on the reservation as the threat of Covid recedes. At one time the nation had some of the highest levels of Covid cases in the U.S.
