Neighborhood Group Battles Crown

It’s David versus Goliath in Sydney as a community group fights billion-dollar casino operator Crown Resorts. The residents of Millers Point have filed suit to stop development of Crown’s massive Barangaroo project (l.).

Includes 90-story tower

The residents of a Sydney, Australia neighborhood called Millers Point are out to stop the construction of a $2 billion casino resort in the coastal city’s Barangaroo precinct. The New South Wales Land and Environment Court will hear a case filed by the residents, who say the Crown Sydney complex with its 90-story hotel tower will cast a literal shadow over their homes.

Defendants in the Millers Fund case include the New South Wales government, Crown Resorts, the Planning Assessment Commission and the developer Lendlease. In a statement, a representative for Lendlease said the company “has worked with Crown, the Barangaroo Delivery Authority and other stakeholders to achieve an appropriate planning outcome for the Barangaroo South precinct. Lendlease has received approval of a modification to the concept plan applying to Barangaroo South from the Planning Assessment Commission. Lendlease intends to defend that approval in the Land and Environment Court.”

Crown Resorts also promises to fight back against the residents.
