Netherlands Calls for Equal Tax on Online Gambling

Online gambling would be taxed at the same rate as brick-and-mortar casinos under a new legislative proposal in the Netherlands. The proposal would raise online taxes to 29 percent if the country moves to legalize online play.

If online gambling is legalized in the Netherlands, legislators want it to be taxed at the same rate as brick-and-mortar casinos.

A proposal to legalize online gambling had set the online tax rate at 20 percent. However, a coalition of MPs form both of the country’s ruling powers propose raising the rate to 29 percent, which is what the government’s casino monopoly Holland Casino and arcade owners have to pay.

The MPs want a uniform rate that should be reduced to 25 percent after three years of online gambling.

Legislators hope to have new online rules in place by summer, though some analysts feel the bump in tax rate and other problems could delay the bill.

Draft proposals also state the license holders will have to contribute to a special fund to help gambling addicts. In addition, there will be a national register of players who break self-imposed limits and who will be banned from playing according to the Dutch News.
