Bolsters international regulatory infrastructure
In advance of the Netherlands’ new gaming and betting act, coming in early 2015 to regulate iGaming, the nation and the island country of Malta have agreed to cooperate on regulations for the online games.
Malta’s Lottery and Gaming Authority says the countries have signed a letter of intent as a step toward greater cooperation between the regulators. It will be followed by the signing of a memorandum of understanding when the new gaming and betting act becomes law.
“This letter of intent gives a clear signal that the two jurisdictions recognize the mutual principles in the regulation of remote gambling,” said Joseph Cuschieri, executive chairman of the LGA. The mutual goals of both jurisdictions are to “ensure utmost consumer protection and a just, responsible and safe provision of gambling services applied through strong and inclusive systems and monitoring.”
Marja Appelman, CEO of the Netherlands Gaming Authority, said the agreement “is an important step towards the development and sharing of common regulatory best practice, which should benefit consumers and operators in both jurisdictions. This cooperation contributes to better regulation of the international gaming industry specifically in terms of remote gambling.”
