The Nevada Gaming Commission has approved the sale of the Gold Strike in Jean, Nevada, by JETT Gaming. Jett is a slot route operator run by members of the Herbst family. Tim Herbst of JETT told the commission that substantial changes are coming to the Gold Strike area.
Herbst envisions a 15,000 square-foot convenience store and a travel plaza in what he sees as a large truck stop-type facility. On the opposite corner, he hopes to build space for up to 20 quick-service restaurants with a “walking mall.” Herbst said, “This is an exciting commercial real estate play, and it just happens to have a hotel-casino on it.”
With regards to the gaming operation itself, Herbst plans on reducing the number of games from 450 to 200, which would fall in line with the current gaming revenue. JETT Gaming has 131 locations on their slot route, including all Terrible Herbst convenience stores. After a 2010 reorganization, the company became Affinity Gaming.
The Gold Strike initially opened in 1987. In 2005, the property became part of MGM Resorts, when they acquired Mandalay Resort Group.
