As the nature of the casino gambler changes, so are the regulations governing the types of gaming they enjoy to help keep Las Vegas a top international gaming destination.
The Nevada legislature during its recent 120-day session enacted many laws that impact the gaming industry. One of the most important, Senate Bill 9, enables the use of skills-based slot machines inside casinos to boost gaming participation among millennials.
Studies show millennials, who grew up playing interactive computer and video games, don’t like the traditional slot machines that are the backbone of most casino profits. Instead, they want a more interactive gaming experience while playing skills-based games of chance.
But that means Nevada’s gaming regulations needed to change to accommodate them and allow for skills-based bonus rounds and more interactive gaming experiences to keep gamblers coming.
The Nevada legislature also enacted laws impacting sports books, including one that enables Nevada-based sports books to operate books in other states that might legalize sports betting.
Another allows corporations and other entities to participate in the race and sports wagering industry, which is designed to spur investment and help to make Nevada a key hub of the sports betting industry as some states consider legalizing it.
The regulatory changes were enacted over several months and after lawmakers and regulatory officials sought information and testimony from industry experts across the state.
