Nevada to Allow Bets on Video Games?

Nevada gaming regulators are considering a proposal that would allow gambling on video game competition. “The market is huge,” said a Las Vegas video game operator, and a change in legislation would enable the state to tap into a younger player demographic.

Plan would also up the odds for frequent players

A legislative study committee in Nevada has recommended that state amend the law to allow the state Gaming Commission to expand the gaming market. Among the newest proposals is one that would permit gambling on video game competitions, reports the Las Vegas Sun.

Reno lawyers Dan Reaser, who represents game manufacturers, is pushing the plan, which would link video games to slot machines. His proposal also would allow casinos to set better odds for loyal customers?for example, changing the odds from 75 percent to 85 percent for a frequent player. Reaser has submitted patents that would tie video games to slot machines.

Christopher LaPorte, owner of video arcade Insert Coins in downtown Las Vegas, said young adults in the 20-to-30-year range grew up playing video games, and could be enticed by new opportunities to play in a way that’s familiar to them. “It’s their lifestyle,” he said.

The proposal “would expand the authority of the Nevada Gaming Commission to promulgate regulations that encourage development and deployment of gaming devices incorporating innovative, alternative and advanced technologies,” according to the measure, which will be presented to the 2015 legislature.
