No Gaming for Kinmen

The Taiwanese island of Kinmen has long been touted as a potential casino destination, but officials now say legalization is out of the question. Vice Mayor Wu Yu Chin says it would wreck the “peaceful lives” of its residents.

Taiwan’s Kinmen Island is looking to boost its tourism profile but won’t be legalizing casinos any time soon.

On a visit to Macau last week to drum up business, Vice Mayor Wu Yu Chin ruled out gambling as a drawing card despite the island’s proximity to mainland China.

“For the citizens of Kinmen having casinos would completely change their peaceful lives,” he said. “Many are skeptical and afraid that it could bring security problems.”

In an event held at Macau Tower, a delegation led by Wu promoted Kinmen’s local culture, food, arts and crafts for its tourism attractions and focused on investment incentives and infrastructure projects under way to make the island more attractive as a destination.
