The Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation (MHA) recently held a ground blessing for its Son of Star Casino, set to open in 2026 in White Shield, North Dakota, about one hour from Bismarck and Minot.
MHA officials said the 37,000-square-foot facility will feature 230 slot machines, six table games, a sportsbook, poker room, restaurant, gift shop, campground and coffee shop. Future phases will include a hotel, event center and convenience store. The tribe also owns and operates the 4 Bears Casino & Lodge in New Town.
DSGW Architecture Principal Erik C. Wedge said the casino’s exterior will present a traditional Native American design and the interior will feature Native American art, historical timelines and artifacts. Wedge said each of the interior’s quadrants will reflect the natural elements of fire, water, earth and wind.
“We are honored to have worked with the MHA Nation to create this new casino. The casino is a beautiful and welcoming space that will provide both entertainment and economic opportunities for the MHA Nation and the surrounding community,” he added. The firm specializes in
indigenous architecture and has worked on more than 400 tribal projects with 40 Native American communities in 14 states.
East Segment Councilman Fred Fox noted, “Having a casino in White Shield offers the framework to generate and foster economic growth, achieve sustainable employment and promote tribal tourism. It’s a win-win for the tribe and the surrounding area.”
