Online gaming sites are a major target for computer hacker attacks, according to a report by technology security firm Akami.

Online gambling sites saw 50 percent of all distributed denial of service attacks in the third quarter of 2015 according to the s latest ‘State of the Internet’ report from the firm.

Total DDoS attacks were up 180 percent over 2014 during the third quarter, with online gambling the main target, the report said.

DDoS attackers overload a website’s bandwidth with hundreds or thousands of simultaneous requests, which render it temporarily non-operational. Hackers then usually ask for a ransom to release the site.

Betfair, PokerStars, Unibet and Svenska Spel are amongst the online gambling brands that have been targeted in the past 12 months
