Ontario Casino to Stay Put

Great Canadian Gaming says it intends to keep the recently acquired Thousand Islands casino (l.) in Gananoque, instead of moving it to nearby Kingston. Gananoque is conveniently located near the U.S. border, and a 20-year license plus an extension from Ontario gaming regulators caused Great Canadian to choose to stay in Gananoque “forever.”

The new owners of the Thousand Islands casino in Gananoque, Ontario, say they have no plans on relocating the casino – ever.

Great Canadian Gaming CEO and President Rod Baker said the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation had give Great Canadian two decades and an extension on the casino’s gaming license, so Great Canadian plans to keep the casino in its current location “forever.”

Great Canadian is the principle owner of the group that recently bought the Thousand Islands casino, and many speculated the new owners might move the casino to Kingston.

Great Canadian’s announcement that it will remain in Gananoque was well received by many local officials.

Thousand Islands Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Tom Russell said local officials breathed a “collective sigh of relief” upon learning the casino will remain in its current location.

Gananoque opened in its current location 14 years ago, and the site was chosen due to its nearness to the U.S. border, and local officials say a combination of low gas prices and the relatively low value of the Canadian dollar compared to U.S. currency as boding well for the casino’s future.

Many local improvement projects also should boost business at the casino and elsewhere in Gananoque, making it an ideal location for the Thousand Islands casino to remain “forever.”
