Pequot Tribe Rehires Former Leader Who Stole From it

A former chairman of the Pequot Tribal Nation in Connecticut who stole $100,000 from his tribe and serving 18 months in federal prison is being hired as an executive secretary to the tribe. Michael Thomas was found guilty for embezzlement in 2013.

The tribal government of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which operates Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut, has hired former tribal chairman Michael Thomas, who served 18 months in federal prison after stealing 0,000 from the tribe.

In 2013 he was found guilty for using a tribal credit card to embezzle money that was used to pay for limousine service and personal expenses.

Thomas, who served for seven years as tribal chairman, has been hired as an executive chief of staff to the tribe’s chief of staff. He was released from prison in May of 2015.

Tribal spokesman Lori Potter called Thomas “gifted” and “intelligent” and added, “As for past failures, poor judgments, immaturity and hard lessons learned, these experiences don’t haunt us, but become part of our cherished arsenal of ‘war stories,’” She added, “They are parables of wisdom that add greater depth and meaning to the legacy of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which we will hand down to our future generations.”
