Possible Vegas Stadium Swap

UNLV and Clark County officials are working on a potential swap of Sam Boyd Stadium (l.) and its land for a 42-acre parcel and potential 55,000-seat stadium located near McCarran International Airport. Representatives for both recently met to begin work on a potential memorandum of understanding for a possible eventual property swap.

Undersized Sam Boyd Stadium could be swapped for 42 acres of prime real estate located much closer to the Las Vegas Strip.

UNLV officials recently told the Las Vegas Review Journal they would be interested in trading Sam Boyd Stadium for a 42-acre parcel on the northeast corner of Tropicana and Koval and just across from the MGM Grand.

Decades-old Sam Boyd Stadium is located seven miles east of UNLV, only holds 38,000 fans and is considered too small and antiquated for many large events, and the university would like a newer, larger one located closer to its campus.

UNLV officials told the Review Journal they would be interested in trading the Sam Boyd Stadium and the property upon which it sits for the 42-acre site on Tropicana and Koval, if it contained a new stadium.

Talk of the potential swap is still in the formative stages, but officials for UNLV and Clark County met October 26 to discuss a possible memorandum of understanding regarding a possible future swap.

UNLV officials envision a 55,000-seat stadium located on the 42-acre parcel, which currently houses some low-rent apartments and assorted small businesses.

While a potential land and stadium swap might happen, an ad-hoc state committee tasked with shoring up the economy in southern Nevada recently reported a new stadium would help boost visitation and lure more large events to the area.
