After years of planning, work crews are onsite at the future home of an $8.6 billion integrated resort (IR) at Yumeshima Island in Osaka, Japan. A project of MGM Resorts International and Orix. Corp., the resort complex will include the country’s first legal casino.
Soil remediation is the first step in the development, with construction expected to follow sometime next summer. The IR is slated to open in the second half of 2030.
According to GGRAsia, the Osaka government has agreed to pay $544.5 million to address environmental issues at the site, including “soft-ground, underground-obstacle and soil-contamination matters.” Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura said concrete is now being poured into the ground to shore up the foundation. The Japan Times reported that liquefaction measures are expected to continue through the 2025 World Expo, which will be held on the same man-made island in Osaka Bay, and be complete in April 2027.
Last fall, Osaka IR Corp., the joint venture between MGM and Orix, officially signed the implementation agreement for the development. Once complete, the IR will include 2,500 hotel rooms across three brands, 730,000 square feet of meeting and convention space, and non-gaming facilities to draw domestic and international tourists.
