Reno Considers Updating Arch

A recent City Council meeting saw members of the council discuss how to spend a $10 million surplus, and the idea of spending $200,000 to update the city's arch came to light. Most seem to be in favor, however, some feel any change may mess with history.

While not as iconic as the Gateway Arch, Reno does have their own arch, and some feel it may be time to update. Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve has been contemplating whether or not the arch is hip enough for a city that is re-branding itself to appeal more to a younger crowd. A recent City Council meeting saw members discuss how to spend a million surplus, and the topic came up.

One proposal calls for a $200,000 overhaul to replace light bulbs with a new system that can be changed with the flip of switch. Since being built in 1987, the arch has been refurbished several times. Although, not everyone seems to be on board with the plan.

“I would hope this council doesn’t move forward and replace that arch,” Councilman Paul McKenzie said. Schieve re-iterated she doesn’t want to replace it, but simply update it. “I certainly don’t want to do anything to the arch that would lose our history moving forward,” she said, then continued, “It’s iconic to our city and it’s important to preserve our city’s history.”
