Raids by Malaysian authorities on online gaming premises and centers have not stopped the operators from getting back online quickly.
According to a report on Yogonet, many such centers are back operating hours after raids. Authorities say they have made more than 200 raids in 2016 with little effect.
Sepang Municipal Council, for example, said there were operators who were raided 18 times but were back in business three hours later.
“They remain undaunted by the authorities as the existing laws do nothing to curb these activities,” Enforcement Division deputy director Hairol Azman Razali told the website. “MPSepang council has provisions under the Cyber Centres and Cyber Cafes (MPSepang) By-Laws 2007, but our role is limited to the task of seizing things. Compared to the Gambling Act under the jurisdiction of other authorities, the provisions of these laws are more extensive and have the power to prosecute owners in courts.”
Hairol Azman said 200 raids were conducted this year and 18,684 computers worth RM2mil were seized, according to the website. Dengkil had the highest rate of illegal gambling activities with 112 premises sealed.
