Revel Workers Rally for Union

Workers at Atlantic City’s Revel Casino staged another rally to support unionization of the casino hotel. Workers are afraid a possible sale of the struggling casino will lead to job cuts and firings.

Revel casino workers staged another rally to unionize workers at the Atlantic City casino that attracted hundreds, according to local reports.

Local 54 of UNITE- HERE—Atlantic City’s largest casino workers union—has charged that Revel workers are not protected if the casino is sold. Casino officials have said they are entertaining offers for the struggling casino.

Revel is the only nonunion casino in Atlantic City.

“This is all about Revel workers being raised up to the same standard as the rest of the city,” said Local 54 President Bob McDevitt. “Layoffs are one thing. If this place is sold there’s no guarantee any of these workers are going to be kept.”

According to the local Press of Atlantic City, the protesters marched in front of the casino’s parking garage chanting pro-union messages and carrying signs that read “UNITE  HERE”

A majority of the workers signed a petition Tuesday demanding the right to form a union, McDevitt said.

Revel officials have said they are not trying to block the union effort and that none of the parties interested in buying the casino have plans to close it.
